Hamlet Symphony

Mokhallad Rasem, Toneelhuis

Mokhallad Rasem surprised us a few years ago with Irakese geesten (Iraqi Ghosts), a physical and critical expression of his experiences of the war in Iraq. Shakespeare’s great tragedies are now providing the inspiration for his productions. After Romeo & Julia (Romeo and Juliet) last year, this season Mokhallad is tackling Hamlet. He has whittled the characters down to the four key figures in the play: Hamlet, Ophelia, Gertrude and Claudius.

The show develops like a dream in which music and dance play an important role. Hamlet conducts a group of street musicians to get at the truth. For the dance aspect, Mokhallad draws on the tradition of the dancing dervishes.

Hamlet Symphony is about doubt. Doubt runs in our blood. When someone is on the point of doing something great, something that will change not only his life for ever, but also that of the people around him, he always has doubts. Other themes follow in the wake of doubt: revenge, love, treachery, murder, greed, death, fear and madness.
