Bloed & rozen

Het lied van Jeanne en Gilles

Joan of Arc and Gilles de Rais. On the face of it, these two historical figures from the fifteenth century are each other’s opposite. Joan, a simple peasant girl, claims to have been instructed by God to free France from English occupation. After a number of spectacular victories, “the Maid of Orléans” was taken prisoner and burned at the stake. Gilles de Rais, one of France’s richest noblemen, fought against the English at Joan’s side. After her death, he succumbed to magic and sexual excesses. He was sentenced to death for sorcery, sodomy and the murder of dozens of young boys. Joan and Gilles: the Maid and the Devil!

Tom Lanoye wrote the script specially for the Avignon Festival at Guy Cassiers’ request. Dominique Pauwels composed the music, which has been sung by the Collegium Vocale Ghent. Tim Van Steenbergen designed the costumes.

The play stars: Katelijne Damen, Stefaan Degand, Abke Haring, Han Kerckhoffs, Johan Leysen, Johan Van Assche and Jos Verbist.
