I HATE MONDAYS #3

Dans ta présence

Toneelhuis, LevelUp, Kavka

What inspires the new generation of Antwerp citizens? In I Hate Mondays young artists from the city take to the stage and invite along their heroes: musicians, speakers, thinkers and makers.
Each edition is curated by a different group.

I HATE MONDAYS #3 is part of the festival L’Afrique c’est chic and is curated by Youth In Action, an organization founded in 2015 by Antwerper Yaman Munga that sets up recreational activities – with music and sports – for neighbourhood youths from the African community. One of the projects is ‘Dans ta présence’, a musically inspired evening presented by young people between the ages of 15 and 28, led by musician Andy Kisema (24). After three previous editions, they have now put together a special fourth edition for I HATE MONDAYS.

The evening will be a mix of music, dance, poetry, theatre and comedy. Well-known African gospel artists have signed up. Expect to go on a journey through countries like Ghana, Angola, Nigeria and Congo.

We are welcoming four special guests:
  • Vocalist Sandra Mbuyi, born in 1984 in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a cult heroine in Africa. Starting at a very young age, she has been singing a unique mix of traditional gospel and soul, with lyrics that express her spirituality and faith. She is in great demand as a singer, and her career is skyrocketing in France.
  • Innocent Alberto is a musician who turned out to be a hero in Africa (Angola and Congo). Since coming to Europe, he has been asked to perform here and there.
  • Docteur Ideologie is a young Congolese vlogger. He is popular with the youth because his videos poke fun at various cultures in this society.
  • Sesapoetry (b. 1997) is a slam poet from Antwerp with Congolese roots. At the age of nineteen she self-published a collection of poems, The Thrill of Victory. She writes her way through life with themes like sorrow, anger, love, racism and love for oneself. Sesapoetry appeared in the first edition of I HATE MONDAYS as well.

I HATE MONDAYS is an initiative of LevelUp, which supports promising young artists from Antwerp and provides a platform for new and varied forms of art. LevelUp is a collaboration between the Kavka youth centre and Toneelhuis, with the support of the Flemish government.
