The Lieutenant of Inishmore
The Lieutenant of Inishmore is part two of the Aran Islands Trilogy by the British writer Martin McDonagh. In this play, McDonagh reduces the theme of terrorist extremism to sitting-room level.
The body of a cat, mutilated beyond recognition, whips emotions into a frenzy in a godforsaken Irish village. Who ran over 'mad' Padraic's cat? Was it an accident or cold-blooded murder? Tired of planting bombs and torturing people in Northern Ireland, Padraic returns home. Once he gets there, he’ll want to get to the bottom of things. Because Padraic is... a real pussy-lover. In his ruthless satire about extreme violence, McDonagh sketches a picture of a blood-curdling world of Irish freedom fighters. The result is 100% politically incorrect, over the top, hilarious, razor-sharp and has a threatening undertone. Like a Tarantino script, but for theatre.
