Each family has its own vocabulary of movements – excellent material then for a dance performance. This ancient social form is put under the spotlight in a piece on which the NTGent ensemble and choreographer Koen Augustijnen are collaborating. Five actors line up as a family. At the centre of the performance is a dramatic event to which each of the five family members must relate. Their five individual movement patterns reveal just as many versions of the facts. However, exactly as in a real family, each word, each movement, each gesture influences the position of the others. Augustijnen shows the image of a disintegrating family with the fragility and wonderment entailed by dislocation.
Music plays an important role in the productions of Koen Augustijnen, who mostly opts for a baroque register. However, for this NTGent production he bases his work on an entirely different idiom: the cinematic, dramatic and often sinister big-band sound of Gil Evans.
Koen Augustijnen is a member of the permanent core of Les Ballets C de la B. He has choreographed productions such as Bâche, Import/Export and Ashes for this Ghent-based dance company and platform for choreographers (with, amongst others, Alain Platel). Augustijnen has also previously worked with actors, including productions by Ivo van Hove (Perfect wedding) and Arne Sierens (Altijd prijs).
