JOSSE DE PAUW
Josse De Pauw’s theatrical career took off in 1976 when he co-founded Radeis International, a Flemish theatre group which went on to successfully tour Europe and further afield, from Vancouver to Hong Kong and from Caracas to Los Angeles. In 1985 De Pauw started working independently but with input from directors, actors, visual artists, composers and musicians. He also began writing plays, many for himself.
1989 brought him his first major film role and he has since appeared in over fifty Belgian and international films. He also directed two films: Vinaya and Übung.
Furthermore, De Pauw writes fiction, short commentaries and travel stories. He has published two books: Werk and Nog.
Since working as artistic director of Toneelhuis for a year in the 2005-2006 season, he has enjoyed a special bond with the company as a theatre-maker. He played the role of Willy Loman in Dood van een handelsreiziger (Death of a Salesman) and the Minister for Culture in Mefisto for ever. In 2007 he made RUHE with Muziektheater Transparant, in 2008 Liefde / zijn handen with LOD and De versie Claus with Toneelhuis. In the 2009-2010 season he proved a masterly Consul in Onder de vulkaan (Under the Volcano), his own adaptation of Malcolm Lowry’s novel directed by Guy Cassiers. Shortly after that he directed Een nieuw Requiem with Muziektheater Transparant.
He has won several prizes for his work as a writer, actor and director and was awarded the Flemish State Prize for Drama.
As an independent theatre-maker, Josse De Pauw has ties with all the above-mentioned theatre companies. In 2010 the KVS and Théâtre National in Brussels undertook to support his work structurally in the foreseeable future.
